Susana is a true gift! You can’t just sit down for a short talk with this captivating woman. Every conversation you have with her will lift you up and draw you in. She is genuinely a breath of fresh air in a world that is often cold and distant.

Having devoted 25 years to the Department of Human Services, Susana always approached her social work with compassion, despite witnessing immense pain and suffering among the children in foster homes. She skillfully interviewed parents, taught parenting classes, and certified homes, all in preparation for the moment those children could safely return home. Her unwavering optimism was a testament to her belief that her efforts would positively impact families.

However, as budget cuts affected the foster care system, the workload increased during an extended hiring freeze, leaving her and her team managing the expectations of those who had left. Burnt out from the extreme demands and unable to provide the support these vulnerable children deserved, she retired prematurely with a heavy heart.

Since 2016, Susana has transitioned into the healthcare sector, yet her passion for social work remains her driving force. Now, as she steps into her role at Emily's Place, she is eager to extend support to our first guest, Robin, and work alongside the board of directors to help realize her vision for future Emily’s Places around the world.
