WHAT WE DO
We host one guest at a time for 9-18 months.
OUR GUESTS
Formerly vibrant, talented women who have been hit by a catastrophic chronic illness/pain with suicidal ideation.
PHASE ONE
REST AND CONVALESCE
Regina Sën, Emily's Place founder, welcomes one guest at a time into her home, where she takes care of everything that would be difficult, or even torturous, for them to do on their own. She cooks, shops, cleans, helps to build a medical team, makes doctor appointments, advocates for their medical care and insurance and social security disability application, and drives them to appointments as needed. This approach allows guests to emerge from a state of constant fight or flight into a state of rest and homeostasis within 3-4 weeks, greatly reducing their suffering and calming their nervous system. For many, she imagines it will be the first time in more than a decade that they are not in torture in every aspect of their life, and this critical period of rest allows them to have the strength to make it through the next stages of Emily's place
This phase continues until the light of our guest's life essence returns to their eyes and countenance. They are no longer a shell of themselves, eyes dull and lifeless. As the light returns to their eyes, their personality and wit also begin to return and re-engage. They are ready for phase two.
PHASE TWO
GUEST EMPOWERMENT SUPPORT
Drawing from her experience as a Wilderness Therapy Instructor, Emily provides structure for guests and their host families with twice daily checkins, timed after breakfast and dinner. Morning Routine including emotional and goal checkins as well as self-affirmation, and meditation followed by eating breakfast and cleaning up together. Evening checkins are the same, except guest and host families communicate if they've completed their goals. If not, what they did accomplish.
Emily Team builds with guest and host family. With host family, there is add structure, including getting the house cleaned and simplified, before bringing in our board member Aimee Doze from "Inspired Living" to organize their house with them for optimum living, settling also upon a menu, complete with recipes, shopping list, household and shopping inventories with order-point triggers built-in. Alongside our empowered living program, we implement our Chronically Thriving Triumph Program.
THE TRIUMPH PROGRAM
Aspen Ambrose Co-Author of the Chronically Thriving Edition of the Award-Winning Triumph Program, took our first guest and three other chronically challenged participants through a narrative therapy process which helps them process their personal trauma(s) and losses into a path of Triumph and healing, while building friendships for life. we worked hard to find a trauma therapist, but during the first nearly 2-1/2 years we struck out in finding one due to therapist shortage. We have since found the most amazing therapist!
PHASE THREE
SOCIAL SERVICES
Susana, our volunteer social worker with thirty years of experience, helps our guests pair with community services and programs to transition them into independent living..
MENTORING, TRANSITIONAL HOUSING
After a guest who is single gains the ability to live independently, our intent is support them in finding employment and provide an onsite sub-market rental unit. It takes far too long to get into low-income housing. In exchange for being able to save up for first/last month rent and deposits, our graduated guest becomes a mentor for the next guest of Emily's Place. This will help our guests continue with purpose, build confidence, re-establish rental history, save for an apartment of their own in the future. and provide an income stream for Emily's Place.
*Guests make their own choice of treatment and are responsible for taking their own medicine.
